The Contract for the implementation of the project “Capacity expansion and modernization of the WWTP Marpissa Paros” was signed the last days by the President of DEYAP, Mr. Yiorgo Poulio, and a representative of the contractor company OTHRYS ATE, in the presence of the Mayor Mr. Kovaios, The budget of the project is 3.220.000 € and the funding was secured from the “Antonis Tritsis” programme of the Ministry of Interior.

This is an extremely important project, as it will lead to the radical upgrade and modernization of an old facility, so that it can cope with the large increase in wastewater and serve the rapidly growing number of visitors and residents of the area. The present contract includes the expansion and doubling of the capacity of the WWTP to serve at least 10,000 Equivalent Residents and treat 3,000m³/day, while the electromechanical equipment of the existing plant will be fully upgraded.
The treatment system that will be applied in the new projects will be based on the method of prolonged aeration in aeration-denitrification tanks, with simultaneous stabilisation of the sludge. Modern equipment for the pre-treatment of wastewater will be installed, with automatic machines for the treatment, sublimation and fat collection in a single closed unit to eliminate noise and odour nuisance. Corresponding modern machinery will be installed for the reception and pre-treatment of sewage. The biological treatment method to be used is similar to the existing operation of the biological reactors and provides sufficient flexibility and reliability to operate the overall project under varying loading conditions. The ventilation system shall be provided by blowers in fine bubble diffusers installed at the bottom of the aerobic zone. The disinfection of the treated water will be done with sodium hypochlorite, while there will still be the possibility of making the water available, after further filtering and disinfection with UV radiation, for irrigation of the adjacent area of the hill of Agios Antonios, in accordance with the current Environmental Conditions Approval Decision. The excess sludge produced by the biological reactors, after thickening and dewatering treatment with special mechanical equipment, can be used in the future for the enrichment of barren soils.
Work will start early next year and is expected to be completed in 18 months.
